ONE WAVE Indigenous Arts & Culture Celebration (Lekwungen Territory)
September 16, 2017 @ 10:00 am
ONE WAVE CELEBRATION: featuring the unveiling of the Longhouse Project at the Legislature, interactive cultural activities, dance and more! (all welcome)
The Longhouse Project is an unprecedented public art installation on the BC Legislature lawn, a historic Lekwungen village site. Four temporary longhouse structures will be raised featuring youth designs in the styles of Coast Salish, Kwakwaka’wakw, Nuu-chah-nulth, and South Pacific peoples. This project was produced in partnership with MediaNet and Nuu-chah-nulth artist Hjalmer Wenstob.
Everyone is welcome to come enjoy interactive displays, educational activities and cultural sharing with Indigenous leaders and artists. Join in the fun with an interactive weaving activity and a public game of Slahal! Experience dance presentations by North and South Pacific groups and works by Indigenous artists Hjalmer Wenstob, Karen Whetung, Eddi Wilson, Nahaan and Victoria’s Indigenous Artist in Residence Lindsay Delaronde.
Hosted on Lekwungen Territory with permission of the Songhees and Esquimalt Nations
